Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)

Ocala, Florida Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) benefits through a private insurance plan.

Most Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage (Part D), and some offer additional benefits such as dental, vision, and hearing services.

At My Health Insurance Spot, our goal is to help you understand how Medicare Advantage plans work, their benefits, costs, and provider networks so you can make informed decisions about your healthcare coverage.

Understanding Medicare Advantage Provider Networks

Many Medicare Advantage plans use networks of doctors, hospitals, specialists, and other healthcare providers.

Two common types of Medicare Advantage plans are:

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Plans

HMO plans generally require members to receive nonemergency healthcare services from providers within the plan's network. Some plans also require referrals from a primary care physician before visiting certain specialists.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans

PPO plans generally provide greater flexibility when choosing healthcare providers. Members may receive covered services from out-of-network providers, although their costs may be higher.

Provider networks, referral requirements, and coverage rules vary by plan.

We will explain these and other Medicare Advantage plan types in greater detail in our section on Different Types of Medicare Advantage Plans.

Important Things to Consider Before Choosing a Plan

Your Medicare Part B Premium

You must generally continue paying your Medicare Part B premium while enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Some Medicare Advantage plans have a $0 additional monthly plan premium, but this does not mean that all healthcare services are free.

Your Doctors and Hospitals

Before enrolling, it is important to verify whether your preferred physicians, specialists, and hospitals participate in the plan's network.

Your Prescription Medications

If prescription drug coverage is included, review the plan's list of covered medications, known as its formulary, along with applicable pharmacies and costs.

Your Healthcare Expenses

Consider the plan's deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and annual maximum out-of-pocket limit.

A plan with a lower monthly premium may have different costs when you receive medical services.

Annual Plan Changes

Medicare Advantage plans can change their premiums, benefits, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, and other terms from one year to the next.

Reviewing your coverage annually can help you determine whether your current plan continues to meet your healthcare needs.

Who Can Enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan?

To enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you generally must:

  • Be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B.
  • Live within the plan's service area.
  • Enroll during an applicable Medicare enrollment period.
  • Meet any additional eligibility requirements for the particular plan.

Individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) can generally enroll in Medicare Advantage plans, subject to applicable plan eligibility requirements.

There is no single Medicare Advantage plan that is right for everyone.
